JMT Day 20: To Guitar Lake: Golden Sunshine and a Spectacular Vista for the Final Night

JMT 2019

Tydal Creek Campsite to Guitar lake: 11 mile

Morning arrived with a welcome touch of warmth, making for a much gentler start to the day.
Knowing that tonight’s destination, Guitar Lake, was only 11 miles away brought an immense sense of relief. With a shorter distance and no grueling passes on the agenda, I enjoyed a relaxed morning and hit the trail well after 8:00 a.m.

While the terrain still threw some rolling ups and downs my way, it was far more forgiving than the previous days. Even so, I could acutely feel the depletion of my physical stamina—whenever the trail turned upward, I struggled to find power in my stride. I couldn’t help but imagine how disastrous it would have been if I had to cross another major pass in this state. I felt profoundly grateful that the worst of the climbing was behind me.

As I pushed forward, I found myself captivated by the sheer beauty of the subalpine forests in Sequoia. It was mind-boggling to see such massive, magnificent trees thriving in this rugged environment above 10,000 feet. The High Sierra never ceases to amaze me with its profound resilience and scale.

For some reason, the moment I stepped into this area, I felt wrapped in an indescribably sacred atmosphere. Every piece of the surrounding scenery looked incredibly divine, as if radiating an otherworldly beauty. Throughout the vast Sierra range, there are places where the sheer scale of nature evokes a profound sense of mystery—like a natural power spot—and I felt that resonance most deeply here in Sequoia. It reminded me of the awe I experienced in the famous Giant Forest; this basin, too, seemed charged with a powerful, inexplicable sense of wonder.

The weather today was bone-dry and beautifully warm, with a brilliant blue sky painted with passing clouds. It felt like a lifetime away from the freezing temperatures of the past few nights. For the first time in a while, I stripped down to just a single shirt and shorts, soaking in the classic California sunshine as I hiked.

As I gained elevation toward Guitar Lake (11,486 ft), the surrounding landscapes opened up dramatically, becoming more stunning with every step.

When I finally arrived at Guitar Lake, the view took my breath away. True to its name, this beautifully shaped alpine tarn sits nestled in a majestic basin. I pitched my tent by the water, knowing instantly that this was one of the most spectacular campsites of the entire journey. Today marked the final full day of trekking before making the push to Mount Whitney, and to spend it under a warm sun surrounded by such pristine beauty felt like the ultimate reward.

Sitting outside my tent, watching the soft light of dusk settle over the granite giants, reality began to sink in.

Tomorrow, I will summit Mount Whitney. Whether I laugh or cry, tomorrow is officially the final day of this grand journey.

The nervous excitement of leaving Yosemite 20 days ago, the agonizing struggle against my heavy pack, the frozen nights, and the grueling triumphs over every high pass—all of it came rushing back in a wave of emotion, filling my heart to the brim.

When the sun rises on this quiet night, the final climb begins. Trusting every step of the trail that brought me here, I am ready to face the highest peak.
